Do Your Employees Find Your Diversity Messaging Consistent With Their Experience In Your Workplace?
Diversity within the workplace
Businesses can give themselves an advantage at recovering from the effects of Covid-19 if they look at extending their workforce. This will promote equality and fairness, avoid racial claims, and increase creativity by drawing ideas from a diverse background.
Throughout history there have been many instances whereby people of black and Asian ancestry have been invited into the UK to help the economy develop, however, this topic is now once more at the forefront of media scrutiny.
Impact of Covid-19 on diversity challenges
It has been clearly reported that the virus has negatively impacted upon the black and Asian communities with disproportionate number of reported deaths in comparison with individuals from white Caucasian backgrounds.
Some employers may feel that hiring from the black and Asian communities may pose a greater health risk to the other workers, however, unless such workers have expressed any underlying health issues, this is a dangerous assumption to make which could open up a wave of discrimination claims with an uncapped compensation limit.
What should employers do?
Employers should provide opportunities and encourage those from black and Asian communities to apply for roles within their organisation, and furthermore, understand why diversity is important to promote a healthy work environment.
In addition, employers should educate existing employees to become an active participant in enforcing zero tolerance towards race discrimination, and other forms of discrimination. A more diverse work culture will promote their business as an employer of choice, which in turn will help to recruit and retain the best talent available to them.
